This paper begins with an introduction on the importance of self-respect and its conception. It then, proceeds to the methodology section highlighting the research question, the method of inquiry, study limitations and literature review. It moves to look at the concept of Self-respect by John Rawls in his Theory of Justice where the two key components of self-respect is highlighted. It then continue to the discussion and Analysis section where the three aspects of self-respect in the category of individual values, free-will and capabilities are discussed in relation to development processes. Then, it takes a reflection on the specific development strategies of participatory development and women empowerment by highlighting the actual obstacles in guaranteeing self-respect in the processes of development. The paper then concludes that without some minimum guarantees on basic conditions of living, realization of self-respect in development processes will remain quite a challenge.

Research Objectives and Core Themes

This paper examines how the concept of individual self-respect, grounded in John Rawls's Theory of Justice, is integrated into various development processes and strategies. The research aims to investigate whether current development models genuinely uphold human dignity or if they treat individuals merely as objects of development rather than as self-directed agents.

  • The relationship between individual values, free-will, and capabilities in development.
  • The role of Participatory Development (PD) in fostering local agency and self-respect.
  • Critiques and implementation challenges of Women Empowerment and gender-focused strategies.
  • The influence of socio-economic constraints on the realization of individual self-respect.
  • The necessity of basic living conditions as a prerequisite for meaningful self-determination.

Excerpt from the Book

4.2 Free-Will

The ability to make choices without constrain by other external forces has been viewed as an essential feature of self-respect. This aspect of self-respect has been incorporated in the development processes and viewed by some scholars as the end of development in itself. According to Amartya Sen, the expansion of the actual freedoms that individuals enjoy constitute development (Sen 2001). From this perspective, the freedom of individuals is conceived as an end of the development process. This means that for any process to be seen as promoting development then, it must expand peoples’ freedoms.

Sen further argues that, the removal of major constraints to freedom in the form of poverty as well as oppression, deprived economic opportunities as well as deplorable social systems, abandonment of public facilities as well as biased or over activity of tyrannical states as indispensable to development (Sen 2001). This means that the main goal of any development process is to ensure that freedom is guaranteed. Poverty is also identified here as a source of unfreedom. Poverty, can impede an individual’s ability to make free choices by making him vulnerable to downward adaptation. Consequently, the downward adaptation will narrow down individual’s range of choices.
