The Poetics of Memory and Fragment in Max Frisch’s Montauk and Peter Handke’s Wunschloses Unglück

Nägele warns of the dangers of proclaiming a general trend towards autobiographical fiction in the 60s and 70s and de Man even doubts the existence and status of the genre. Therefore, I want to aim at a simple comparative perspective and just look at the comments Max Frisch and Peter Handke make on memory (and so inevitably also on the self and our perception of self) in Montauk (1975) and Wunschloses Unglück (1974).

The extent to which these works really are autobiographical is irrelevant. It is not whether or not a text is autobiographical and what it tells us about the author’s life that is interesting. How one author fictionalises a personal event is also obviously impossible for criticism to analyse (and subconscious). What interests me is not how Montauk (M) and Wunschloses Unglück (WU) are two examples of the genre of autobiography but what they disclose about the processes of literary production in general and what this can reveal about our perception and reminiscence of experiences, and how it contributes to the ‘invention’ of the self.

The Poetics of Memory and Fragment in Max Frisch’s Montauk and Peter Handke’s Wunschloses Unglück

Fictionalising and Other Perspectives

Memory as fiction

Mnemonics, Fragments and the Poetics of Memory

Objectives and Core Themes

This academic paper examines the intersection of memory, narrative structure, and the process of fictionalisation in Max Frisch’s "Montauk" and Peter Handke’s "Wunschloses Unglück". The author explores how both writers employ fragmented narrative techniques and mnemonics to challenge the coherence of autobiography, ultimately questioning whether the representation of the "self" in writing is inherently a fictional act.

  • The role of fragmentation and montage in autobiographical narratives.
  • The use of "mnemonics" or "aides mémoire" as triggers for reconstructing the past.
  • The conflict between the desire for authentic expression and the structural necessity of fictionalisation.
  • A comparative analysis of narrative perspectives ("er" vs. "ich") in modern German autobiography.
  • The concept of "cultural memory" and the struggle to overcome loss through language.

Excerpt from the Book

Mnemonics, Fragments and the Poetics of Memory

Montauk and Wunschloses Unglück are similar in their poetics of memory; their use of fragments and mnemonics. Mnemonics, or aides mémoire, in their original meaning are clues which help us remember things better, they might be rhymes or an achrostichon. I use them as names, objects or physical sensations which cause us to – voluntarily or not – remember another situation in which a given person, object or sensation played a role. A famous literary example for this is, of course, Proust’s Madeleine cookie. Wunschloses Unglück and Montauk use similar techniques. Handke weaves the story of his mother from one object to another, (mainly household objects), so much so, that just being in the kitchen reminds the narrator:

Einmal ist mir beim Brotschneiden das Messer abgerutscht, und mir kam sofort wieder zu Bewusstsein, wie sie den Kindern am Morgen kleine Brotstücke in die warme Milch geschnitten hat, (WU97).

Then he remembers her as eating bread crusts (WU98) and feels

Die schmerzliche Erinnerung an sie bei den täglichen Handgriffen, vor allem in der Küche, (WU99).

The mother is nothing but the sum of her daily routines: „Sie versuchte unordentlich zu werden, aber da hatten sich die täglichen Handgriffe schon zu sehr verselbständigt“,(WU72). She becomes a thing herself when remembered by her son: „Sie wurde ein neutrales Wesen, veräußerte sich in den täglichen Kram“, (WU37).

Summary of Chapters

The Poetics of Memory and Fragment in Max Frisch’s Montauk and Peter Handke’s Wunschloses Unglück: The introduction establishes the comparative framework, arguing that the generic classification of these works as autobiographies is secondary to their function as explorations of literary production and the "invention" of the self.

Fictionalising and Other Perspectives: This section investigates how the authors use contrasting narrative perspectives to expose the inherent fictionalisation involved in transforming personal experience into written text.

Memory as fiction: The analysis delves into how memory is not merely a record of the past but is actively constructed and interfered with by present perceptions, linguistics, and the desire to impose structure on life.

Mnemonics, Fragments and the Poetics of Memory: The final chapter explores the specific role of objects and sensations as "mnemonics" that trigger involuntary memory, demonstrating how both authors use fragments to acknowledge the impossibility of creating a perfectly unified narrative of a life.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the fundamental focus of this research?

The work investigates the narrative strategies used by Max Frisch and Peter Handke to depict the act of remembering. It focuses on how both authors navigate the tension between "real" experience and the inevitable fictionalisation that occurs when writing about the self.

What are the primary thematic areas covered?

The core themes include the poetics of fragmentation, the function of mnemonics, the relationship between language and individuation, and the inherent subjectivity of autobiography.

What is the central research question?

The research explores how the authors' use of fragments and narrative structures reveals the nature of human memory and whether the written "self" can ever be anything other than a fiction.

Which scientific method is employed in this paper?

The paper utilizes a comparative literary analysis, examining specific textual instances and structural techniques within the two primary works to draw conclusions about their respective poetics.

What topics are discussed in the main body?

The main body covers the juxtaposition of narrative perspectives, the role of language as a structure for reality, the concept of "Verdinglichung" (thingness) in memory, and the use of mnemonic fragments to signal the limitations of autobiography.

Which keywords define this study?

Key terms include autobiography, fictionalisation, fragmentation, mnemonics, subjectivity, and the concept of the self in contemporary literature.

How does the author define "mnemonics" in the context of these books?

The author defines mnemonics as names, objects, or physical sensations that act as catalysts—voluntarily or involuntarily—to evoke specific past situations or memories.

Why does the author argue that "Montauk" is a form of montage?

The author suggests that "Montauk" functions as a montage because it consists of enigmatic, fragmented notes that draw attention to the art of storytelling, rather than attempting to hide the construction process behind a coherent narrative.
