This is a study on the absenteeism committed by the 4Ps beneficiaries despite the support from the government. Consistent school attendance is critical if students are to build and maintain a foundation for ongoing learning and academic success throughout life. When students are not in attendance, they miss essential instruction, which often cannot be replicated. This case study describes the experiences of five (5) high school students identified with chronic student absenteeism from a purposefully selected junior and senior high 4Ps student beneficiaries of T. National Agricultural School. Through a semi-structured interview process the study sought to understand the reasons of absenteeism of those students identified with chronic student absenteeism, along with the voices of their parents and teachers.
The findings reveal that despite the support from the government through the 4Ps fund, students do make absences due to peer influence, financial problem, family concerns, lack of interest and illness. These show a clear manifestation of an existing program that needs a thorough evaluation in coming up with a rational solution to the problem. With the prevailing absenteeism problem among the 4Ps beneficiaries, their academic performance suffered a big blow on their grades prompting them to do some measures to pass the subjects. Hence, to compensate what they have missed, special projects and activities were done to cope with the situation. In light with the findings, teachers should come up with a more serious and strict monitoring mode of attendance of the 4Ps beneficiaries. With this, a strong bond between the parents and the teachers to work together should be developed to closely monitor the students' activities regularly. Likewise, the school should involve the students in academic awakening activities as one of the measures used to reduce absenteeism and ultimately, increase academic performance.
Because of poverty, many families are left deprived of their basic needs. The children are forced to stop going to school to help their families. With this as the main ground, the Philippine government initiated a program called the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps) to address poverty in response to the country’s commitment to the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). This program aims to provide cash assistance to the less fortunate to alleviate their immediate needs and break the intergenerational transmission and cycle of poverty.

Chapter Summaries
Background and Rationale: This chapter introduces the problem of absenteeism, particularly among students from impoverished families. It highlights the role of poverty in hindering access to education and describes the 4Ps program designed to alleviate poverty and promote school attendance. However, the chapter notes that despite this program, absenteeism remains a significant issue, necessitating further investigation into the underlying causes. The chapter uses statistics on school attendance rates in the Philippines to emphasize the pervasiveness of the problem and its disproportionate impact on children from low-income families. The specific context of T. National Agricultural School, where absenteeism is a major concern, is also presented, setting the stage for the study.
Theoretical Framework: This chapter outlines Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs as the theoretical foundation for understanding student motivation and behavior. It explains how unmet physiological, safety, belongingness, and esteem needs can contribute to absenteeism. The framework posits that students struggling to meet basic needs may prioritize those needs over education, leading to increased absences. The chapter connects the theory to the context of the study by suggesting that the financial assistance provided by the 4Ps program can address lower-level needs and, if properly implemented, facilitate better school attendance.
Methodology: This chapter details the research design, participants, instruments, data collection methods, and ethical considerations employed in the study. It specifies the qualitative approach, describing the semi-structured interview process used to gather data from students, parents, and teachers. The chapter explains how the data was analyzed to identify themes and patterns related to student absenteeism. The chapter addresses ethical concerns to ensure responsible data collection and reporting, maintaining the confidentiality and well-being of the participants.
Results and Discussions: This section presents the findings of the study organized around three themes: experiences of working students, coping mechanisms, and lessons learned. While the specific content of each theme is not detailed here to avoid spoilers, the overview explains how the results provide valuable insight into the complexities of student absenteeism within the context of the 4Ps program. The themes collectively address the reasons for absences, how students handle the challenges, and the valuable insights gained during this process.

Frequently Asked Questions: A Case Study of Chronic Absenteeism Among 4Ps Beneficiary High School Students
What is the main focus of this case study?
This case study investigates the reasons behind chronic absenteeism among high school students who are beneficiaries of the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps) at T. National Agricultural School. It aims to understand the contributing factors to absenteeism and explore potential solutions.
What methodology was used in this study?
The study employed a qualitative research approach using semi-structured interviews with students, parents, and teachers. Data analysis focused on identifying recurring themes and patterns related to student absenteeism.
What are the key themes explored in the study?
The study focuses on three main themes: 1) the experiences of working students, 2) the coping mechanisms employed by students facing challenges, and 3) the lessons learned by students as a result of their experiences. These themes provide insights into the multifaceted reasons behind absenteeism.
What theoretical framework guided the study?
Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs served as the theoretical framework. The study explored how unmet needs (physiological, safety, belongingness, esteem) might influence students' prioritization of work or other needs over school attendance.
What are some of the factors contributing to absenteeism identified in the study?
The study investigates several factors contributing to absenteeism, including poverty, the impact (or lack thereof) of the 4Ps program, peer influence, financial difficulties, family issues, and lack of interest in school.
What is the significance of this study?
The study aims to provide valuable insights into the complexities of student absenteeism, particularly among students from impoverished families. Its findings could inform interventions to improve school attendance and academic performance among 4Ps beneficiaries.
What are the key findings of the study (summarized)?
The "Results and Discussions" section presents findings organized around the three themes mentioned above. Specific details are not provided here to avoid spoilers, but the results offer insights into the reasons for absences, coping strategies, and lessons learned by students.
What are the implications of this research?
The study’s findings can inform the development of targeted interventions to address student absenteeism and improve school attendance and academic performance among 4Ps beneficiaries. This could involve strategies that address both the financial and social-emotional needs of students.
