This paper examines the other side of gender violence. Domestic violence is not always about men being victimizers and women being victims. In this study, I tried to investigate the opposite of this assumption.

It is generally assumed that, in our Moroccan culture, women, the fairer sex, are the victims of abuse and ill-treatment on the part of their male partners, the rough sex. In this research paper, we aim to examine the reverse of this assumption. Specifically, we aim to provide an answer to the question of whether Moroccan women abuse their male partners, and if the answer is in the affirmative, we intend to answer another, related, double question, namely how and why do Moroccan women abuse their male partners? It would be noted that, in the present work, we use the expression "women’s tyranny” to refer to women’s ill-treatment of men by using harshness, cruelty, and violence, and their prioritization of their own selfish interests over those of men. It also implies the violation of men’s rights and the questioning of their manhood. “The term women’s tyranny will be defined and discussed at length in chapter 1”

Research Objectives and Themes

The primary objective of this research is to challenge the traditional assumption that men are the sole perpetrators of abuse in Moroccan culture. By examining the phenomenon of "women's tyranny"—defined as the ill-treatment of men through harshness, cruelty, violence, and the prioritization of selfish interests—the study seeks to determine if this behavior is a factual occurrence or merely a fiction, ultimately providing insights into gender relationships and the socio-cultural perceptions of abuse.

  • Examination of the "women's tyranny" phenomenon within the Moroccan cultural context.
  • Analysis of gender dynamics and the inversion of traditional abuse stereotypes.
  • Investigation into whether the Mudawana influences female behavior toward husbands.
  • Assessment of how Moroccan society perceives and responds to instances of women abusing their male partners.
  • Exploration of husbands' reactions and the role of cultural shame in reporting abuse.

Excerpt from the Book

1.7 Women’s tyranny

Women’s tyranny refers to women’s ill-treatment of men by using harshness, cruelty, and violence, and their prioritization of their own selfish interests over those of men. It also implies the violation of men’s rights and the questioning of their manhood.

It is worth pointing out that women’s tyranny takes many forms, but in this section we are going to focus solely on its verbal and psychological forms. To commence with the first form, it occurs, particularly when women use words and body language to inappropriately criticize men. It also occurs when a man cannot satisfy his wife in bed «sexual gratification". In this case, the wife might use hurting words or statements so as to relegate and scorn the husband’s manhood.

One of the most used statements in Morocco against men who are unable to grant sexual gratification to their wives is “nta mashi rajal” (Literally translated, you are not a man). Undoubtedly, this statement will leave a deep trace in the man’s personality to the extent that it might destroy his masculinity. Likewise, when men are criticized unfairly or unreasonably, they are often told that the criticisms were "just a joke", and that it is their own problem that they do not find the joke funny. In brief, this form of women’s tyranny can be sometimes noxious, for it is often not easily recognized as tyranny, and therefore it can go on for extended periods, causing severe damage to men's self-esteem and self-worth. Damaged men may fail to take advantage of opportunities that would enrich their lives because they come to believe they are not worthy of those opportunities.

To finish with the second form, it often contains strong emotionally manipulative content designed to force the victim (man) to comply with the abuser’s wishes. It may be emotional abuse in this sense when it is designed to cause emotional pain to victims or to make fun of them in attempts to gain compliance and counter any resistance.
