Excerpt from the Book

1.6 Microsoft’s Strategy

Founded in 1975, Microsoft operates worldwide with offices in more than 100 countries. As its current vision, the company states: “Microsoft is a technology company whose mission is to empower every person and every organization on the planet to achieve more. Our strategy is to build best-in-class platforms and productivity services for a mobile-first, cloud-first world.” This part gathers the relevant publicly available information about the company to see if a strategic approach can be determined.

In 2013, Microsoft, in a reversal of its divisional structure, disbanded its eight product divisions and created four new ones arranged around broader functional themes to streamline its technologies and compete better with Apple and Google in the global mobile and internet markets. The goal was to reduce duplication and create more cooperative teamwork among the new managers. “The earlier approach, intended to copy the success of companies such as General Electric, had left Microsoft ill-prepared for the fast-moving technology world,” said Rob Helm, an analyst at Directions on Microsoft. Researchers state that Microsoft’s corporate structure reflects the needs of the IT hardware and software business in response to market dynamics, which can be interpreted as a high need for global integration.

The bulk of Microsoft’s product development work takes place in Redmond, Washington, where the company is headquartered. The company also operates R&D facilities in other parts of the U.S. and around the world, including Canada, China, Denmark, Finland, France, India, Ireland, Israel, Japan, and the United Kingdom. The work of these foreign facilities is mainly limited to producing foreign language versions of popular Microsoft programs such as Office. Microsoft itself states that it localizes many of its products to reflect local languages and conventions. This may require modifying the user interface, altering dialog boxes, and translating text. However, in practice, the products are highly standardized for the global market: a person in any part of the world can start a program, even without knowing the language.
