Excerpt from the Book

Leadership style and anti-poaching strategies.

The reduction in the incidence of poaching has largely been a two prong approach of law enforcement and conservation education which has enhanced the collaborative approach of natural resources management with fringe communities. Wildlife conservation is a difficult task which requires multifaceted approaches to achieve the desired outcomes of reducing poaching, securing habitats, increasing animal numbers and promoting public good. The law enforcement officer noted that when he assumed post he did a background check (environmental scanning) of the fringe communities to find out where incidences of poaching was rife and mapped out strategies to counteract. Patrolling activities are normally designed for field employees to perform which depicts essentially task oriented activity; however under field conditions employees are expected to exhibit flair and finesse. He stated for example you can teach how employees should lay ambush for a poacher but you cannot show how they should chase and arrest a poacher under varying field conditions.
