The paper will present a theoretical design for the use of nuclear power as a source of power for propulsion and power supply for high altitude platforms or HAP's. A short history of past proposals for nuclear power for airborne craft will be examined and a more practical application of 'derivative' nuclear power will be examined in light of the long endurance times needed for these high altitude 'airborne satellites' platforms.

Zielsetzung und Themenschwerpunkte (Objectives and Key Themes)

This paper presents a theoretical design for the use of nuclear power as a source of energy for propulsion and power supply for high-altitude platforms (HAPs). The paper examines past proposals for nuclear power in airborne craft and explores more practical applications of "derivative" nuclear power, considering the long endurance times required for these high-altitude platforms.

  • Nuclear power for propulsion and power supply of HAPs
  • The history of nuclear power for airborne craft
  • "Derivative" nuclear power for HAPs
  • The use of energy carriers, such as electricity and hydrogen power
  • The challenges and considerations of nuclear waste management

Zusammenfassung der Kapitel (Chapter Summaries)

  • ABSTRACT: This section outlines the main points of the paper, introducing the concept of nuclear power for HAPs and the use of "derivative" nuclear power.
  • INTRODUCTION: This section defines HAPs and their characteristics, providing context for the discussion of nuclear power for these platforms. It also briefly touches on the history of nuclear power for aircraft.
  • ENERGY CARRIERS: This section focuses on the use of energy carriers like electricity and hydrogen power to provide a more practical and safe way to utilize nuclear power for HAPs. Different methods of producing hydrogen from nuclear power are listed.
  • NUCLEAR WASTE: This section discusses the challenges of nuclear waste management, focusing on the long half-life of actinides and potential solutions for reducing their volume and radioactivity. The section also emphasizes the importance of long-term containment.
  • SUMMARY: This section summarizes the main points of the paper, concluding that while nuclear power is not a complete solution, its use as a source of energy carriers, such as electricity and hydrogen, presents a viable option for the future of HAPs.
