Excerpt from the Book

3. 3. British images of Germany during the Second World War

Since the British image of Germany is highly influenced by the historical meaning of the National Socialism and the Second World War this phase of history will get a particular attention here.

In the experience of Schweitzer the NS regime never had gained high reputation in Britain. On the contrary until spring 1939 many British politicians could understand Hitler's policy because it seemed logical for Germany to aim at the final revision of the treaty of Versaille and many, as the Germans, were tricked by Hitler's speeches and his wrong promises (cf. Schweitzer 203 ff.). Only gradually people saw through Hitler's true plans if they were interested in politics at all. After Churchill took office most people considered Chamberlain's policy of an agreement with Hitler for the whole of Europe as inacceptable and in 1940 it became clear that the replaced conservative government had been tricked by the totalitarian state. This act of deception meant a traumatic experience to a whole Anglo-American generation (cf. Schweitzer 204). Nevertheless in the opinion of the author still in 1939/40, before the end of the relative ceasefire at the western front, there was no general anti-German atmosphere although there definitely was an anti-Hitler attitude. Only after the ‘Battle of Britain’ British people became aware of the the danger of a German invasion and the differentiation between Germans and Nazis became more an more unclear (cf. Schweitzer 205 f.). For the first time since 1066 there was again the danger of a German invasion and the resistance to this danger strengthened the underlying, separate identity against the European mainland which can be observed still today (cf. Schweitzer 206).
