This paper examines the subject, the elite, and the imperial ideologue in the Maghreb in the aftermath of colonialism. Given that the hammer of imperialism is still ubiquitous, the conditions of the postcolonial self today need to be seen from the perspective of those who still succumb to conditions that are independent of their will—the subjects—and from the perspective of those who are meant to represent them—the elite. How does the subject live amid a postcolonial society that makes very little progress? How does the elite represent and remedy the postcolonial Maghrebi condition in its totality? The paper implements a symptomatic approach to the postcolonial everyday to unearth its agonizing contradictions while also supplying realms of debate and remedy. While unearthing imperial conditioning, local enclosure and material deprivation, theorizing a free, reasonable self has to become the watchword, laying bare the whims of stomach and fantasy for the postcolonial self to join the competition in a world of shifting stratagems and paradigms.
