James Joyce’s "After the Race" (1914) appears to be a simple story about a rich Irish boy who spends an evening out with rich foreign friends. But what this paper will argue is that beneath this surface Joyce is presenting a bitter critique of Ireland’s colonial situation. The story is really about what happens when colonized people try too hard to imitate their rulers, and how the pursuit of money and status is just self-deception. The protagonist Jimmy Doyle is not a foolish young man. He represents a type of Irishman who helps foreign businessmen rather than invest in his own country. In trying to act like a rich European, he only shows that he will never really be one of them. The fast car. The fancy dinner. The card game. All part of the story that shows how Ireland was treated as a poor backroad for foreign wealth. Jimmy’s last loss at cards is not only money but self-respect and the future of his nation. Joyce gives us a character who buys into a system that was never meant for him.
