Summary Details

Oceans are fundamental for global food security, economic prosperity, as well as environmental sustainability. Yet, one of the most significant threats to marine ecosystems—ocean hypoxia, or the depletion of dissolved oxygen in coastal waters, has received comparatively little attention from an economic perspective. While scientific research has extensively examined the ecological consequences of hypoxia, its broader economic implications remain less well understood.

In "The Economics of Hypoxia", economist Dennis Shen investigates the relationship between oxygen depletion and fisheries production specifically in the Mediterranean and Black Sea. Drawing on data from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM) as well as the World Resources Institute (WRI), the study develops an empirical framework for assessing how hypoxic marine conditions may influence the productivity of fisheries.

The findings indicate that hypoxia is associated with significant declines in fish catch and has an even greater effect on bottom-dwelling crustaceans and bivalves. The research further explores whether such declines result from migration of sea dwellers or instead mortality and examines the wider economic consequences for fisheries, coastal communities, and marine resource management.

Beyond presenting statistical evidence, the dissertation – which was awarded a Distinction from the London School of Economics – highlights the growing importance of integrating economics with environmental science for addressing challenges for the world's oceans. It discusses the policy implications of nutrient pollution, habitat degradation, and sustainable fisheries management while identifying areas where further research may be required.

The work offers valuable insights for economists, environmental researchers, policy makers, students, and anyone else interested in marine conservation, marine economics, and the economic effects of environmental change. It contributes to a growing body of interdisciplinary research seeking practical solutions for the long-term sustainability of our world's seas.
