Zusammenfassung Leseprobe Details

Elizabeth Spencer's lifelong love for the south almost drips from the pages of her novels and short stories. Even though she spent most of her life away from her native grounds, Spencer continued to write about the places that marked her youth in Novels such as “The Salt Line” and short stories as “The Gulf Coast.” In the latter of the two, she describes the world of South Mississippi with its tranquil way of life that was disrupted by the violent Hurricane Camille in 1969. Spencer uses vivid imagery to place the reader into her shoes, experiencing the drama of seeing the drastic and swift change the hurricane made to the place she loved so much, which seemed timeless and unchangeable before.

Excerpt from the Book

4.2 Major Themes:

There is no action in the story. The major theme is the author's love for the serenity and peaceful lifestyle of the Mississippi Gulf Coast. She describes the gulf almost as a living thing that she interacts with. For example she writes “... I was to return to the coast many times over. A nagging sense began to persist that the coast was withholding something,” when describing one occasion when she returned to the Gulf with some friends. She then describes the first time she visited Ship Island. Describing her commute on the ferry, she again invokes a sense of timelessness and peace (as characteristics of the area): “It take these little tourist ferries well over an hour to make the twelve miles or so to the island. But who is in a hurry?” She even begins the story saying “If I could have one part of the world back the way it used to be,” enumerating elite historical places such as “Rome before Nero” or Babylon, “I want the Mississippi Gulf Coast back as it was before Hurricane Camille.”

While the first part of the story is all about the way the coast used to be, the second is about the shock she had seeing the area devastated by the hurricane. She uses the experiences of locals with the “monster” to express the horror that the area suffered. For example she cites a conversation between an old woman talking to a fellow on the bus she had overheard. The woman had to evacuate and wait the hurricane out in Biloxi, Mississippi as it was not safe in Gulfport. She repeated: “It was something more than natural. It was like one of them bomb experiments done got loose. It was just a lot more awful than anything natural could be.” A bit later she described driving down the rerouted beach drive -“I saw whole groves of pine trees reduced to blackened stumps, as though the land had been burned over. I was told that sand driven by winds that had reached two hundred miles an hour (and probably much more:instruments at the time could go no higher) had blackened whatever it struck.”
