On May 15 1948, near the White Tower in Salonika, a boatman saw in a distance of 137 meters something floating on the surface of the water. He approached and found a dead body. The dead man was George W. Polk, a distinguished American journalist, a hero of World War II and head of the reporters’ network of Columbia Broadcasting System in the Middle East. Polk’s interests focused on Greece, and he sincerely wished the country to do well, and above all to reach a peace agreement soon.

Who killed Polk and why?

Who killed Polk and why? The crime was bizarre and, at least according to information published by the General Security Administration of Thessaloniki, it was impossible to be attributed to a Greek. 36

This can be understood. But then to whom should one attribute the responsibility for the death of the eminent American journalist?

At the time, there was a Civil War in Greece between the Communist led “Democratic Army of Greece” and the government sponsored “National Army”. Unsurprisingly, the media of the government blamed the crime on the communists.

George Polk was murdered of his way to meet Markos [. He intended to meet the leader of the brigands at all costs. The despicable crime has the mark of the reds’ malice and monstrosity.37

Indeed, Polk had the intention of entering the guerrilla controlled territory to get an interview from Markos Vapheiadēs, the military leader of the “Democratic Army”.38 Why would Vapheiadēs cancel his meeting with the American journalist?39 On the contrary, the government of Athens would welcome the news that Polk’s mouth had closed for ever. As it was underlined in the article of a leading American newspaper:

[Only] the dead do not talk in Greece. 40

In the same article it was explained that in any case,

However, from the blue dead lips of George Polk comes a tale which may shake the graft-ridden Greek Government to its rotten core.41
