Intensity of Rivalry among competitors

The exceptional market structure of the commercial aircraft industry imposes a great pressure on the equally balanced competitors. This trend is empowered by the slow and even, during the last 3 years, declining market growth. The differentiation opportunities are very limited and the demand can be considered as being universal. Additionally, the companies operate in an industry with extremely high fix costs, which forces to maximize the usage of their resources. These resources are unique and cannot be sold easily - high exit barriers. Finally, each contract is worth multiple million dollars, and can initiate the evolvement of a significant competitive advantage in comparison with the other firm. The hard struggle for the Easyjet order illustrates the immense competition between Boeing and Airbus adequately. Summarizing, even though the rivalry is limited to two participants the market structure and characteristics of the sector create an extremely high degree of competition.

Evaluating the analysis of the aerospace industry’s competitive environment with respect to the commercial aircraft sector, one can state that although the market is exceptionally protected from any new entrants and practically no congruent substitute products can be found, it is characterized by a strong competition, which arouses mainly from the market structure (oligopoly). The high bargaining power of buyers forced the aircraft companies to drastic cost reductions in the last years – mostly increased reductions of the labor force on both sides of the Atlantic. This development is likely to increase in the future, since both companies make their operations more and more efficient in order to stay competitive. Furthermore, the rivalry between Boeing and Airbus is not a competition between two different firms, but rather between two governments, which subsidize the companies noticeably. Therefore, one should take into consideration the competitive features of different regions, the United States of America and Europe, in order to gain a comprehensive understanding of the competitiveness level within the aerospace industry.
