Conclusion

Objectives and Topics

This essay aims to analyze the phenomenon of nearshoring by using the traditional German toy manufacturer Steiff as a case study. It examines the company's past challenges with outsourcing production to China, evaluates the strategic transition to nearshoring in Portugal, and assesses the sustainability of this global strategy for the brand's future competitiveness.

  • The paradox of global markets vs. country-specific product requirements.
  • Challenges of long-distance outsourcing: quality loss, logistics, and communication barriers.
  • Comparison of global sourcing strategies (Onshore, Nearshore, Offshore).
  • Evaluation of Portugal as a competitive manufacturing location.
  • Sustainability and long-term strategic decision-making in the toy industry.

Excerpt from the Book

Situation & Complication until 2009 - Outscourcing to China

The global toy manufacturing market is dominated by Chinese competition. In order to survive the battle of international competition, multinational companies have to get maximum process efficiencies and highly effective business outcomes. For this reason “international business depends on balancing the benefits and risks associated with doing business in a country”. Steiff thought that they could win this battle by outsourcing large parts of their production to China, but by late 2009 the main activators for repositioning the brand were the concerns, which are shown below.

By moving to China Steiff tried to participate from the first mover advantage, but did not succeed. Their new strategy was against the business trend of leaving Europe and sourcing the whole production in: Steiff has 550 employees in Tunisia, 300 in Germany and 100 in Portugal. Through this operation Steiff transfers “competencies, skills, and know-how from the established operations […] to the new wholly owned subsidiary. [That] are principal ways of creating value” with less potential for unpleasant surprises.

Summary of Chapters

Situation & Complication until 2009 - Outscourcing to China: This chapter outlines the market pressures that led Steiff to initially outsource production to China and the subsequent quality and logistical failures they encountered.

The current Solution - Nearshoring as Steiffs’ Global Strategy: This section analyzes the shift toward nearshoring in Portugal, identifying the competitive advantages of this location regarding labor skills, cultural proximity, and logistics.

Conclusion: This final part synthesizes the findings, arguing that while there is no single remedy for all strategic challenges, Portugal provides a sustainable and competitive environment for Steiff's future operations.
