I have often amused myself with thinking how different a place London is to different people.

James Boswell

What is a city? Some people associate it with diversity, size, mobility, freedom, hope, glamour, change etc. For the others, on the other hand, the city stands for chaos, crowds, misery, poverty, noise, loneliness, anonymity, despair, decadence and crime. Some are glad to live there and others try to escape from it.
One of the most important, biggest and famous cities in the world is London. The capital of Great Britain that lies on the river Thames has a very long history. Today London is a very important industrial, commercial and cultural centre, not only in Great Britain but also in the entire world. It is a city with thousands of different faces and places.
For centuries, London inspired writers such as V. Woolf, P. Ackroyd, J. Sinclair and in particular Charles Dickens, who is regarded as the first London novelist.

Research Objectives and Themes

This paper examines the representation of London as a central setting in Colin MacInnes’s 1959 novel, Absolute Beginners. The primary objective is to analyze how the city’s geography and social atmosphere are perceived through the eyes of the young, nameless narrator, and to determine whether the setting functions merely as a background or as an active, defining force in the narrative.

  • The evolution of London's post-war social landscape and cultural diversity.
  • The role of the teenage protagonist as an observer and participant in urban subcultures.
  • The intersection of personal narrative and historical reality, specifically the 1958 Notting Hill riots.
  • The symbolic and literal importance of London locations in shaping the characters' worldviews.

Excerpt from the Book

[T]his is London, not some hick city in the provinces. This is London, man, a capital, a great big city where every kind of race has lived ever since the Romans!

[T]wisting slowly on your bar stool from the east to south, like Cinerama, you can see clean new concrete cloud-kissers, rising up like felixes from the Olde Englishe squares, and then those gorgeous parks, with trees like classical French salads, and then again the port life down along the Thames, that glorious river, reminding you we’re on an estuary, a salt inlet really, with crazy seagulls circling up from it and almost bashing their beaks against the circular plate glass and then, before you know it, you’re back again round a full circle in front of your iced coffee cup (11).

But the view is partly blocked up. “Looking north you don’t see much, it’s true, and westward the view’s entirely blocked up by the building you’re inside” (11). To the west of the building Napoli is located (the area where he lives). According to McLeod MacInnes wanted to indicate right from the beginning that “narrator’s ability to look at London is limited and selective. […] The scene [also] emphasizes the incompleteness of the narrator’s vision of London and warns that throughout the novel his view of Napoli will be blocked, limited by the position he adopts” (McLeod 2004:53).
