This paper discusses the film Sin Nombre (2009), directed by Cary Joji Fukunaga, in relation to the portrayal of Latinos/as, and whether this film can be considered a piece of the “Culture Industry.” For the analysis of the movie, I apply the concepts discussed in class. Also, I compare this motion picture with some of the themes which Elana Zilberg describes in her essay “Fools Banished from the Kingdom: Remapping Geographies of Gang Violence between the Americas (Los Angeles and San Salvador)”.
The plot of this “fusion of a road movie, gangster epic[,] [w]estern and tragic romance” (Wood 1) is set in Latin America. It narrates the journey of Sayra, who is the main character and is played by Paulina Gaitán, going from Honduras to New Jersey. She travels with her uncle and father—the latter has been recently deported from the US. The purpose of the trip is to join their family in the U.S. where she hopes to be able to lead a better life.

Excerpt from the Book

Without Name – Latino/a Immigration in Fukunaga’s Sin Nombre

All these events lead the characters of the movie to be people as perceived as “with no name.” This is what the title of the film appears to suggests, “undocumented economic immigrants who […] fail to appear on a country's register” (Diestro-Dópido 1). Therefore, while this movie focuses on the theme of Latina/o immigration in the U.S., a topic vastly dealt with in many other films, it develops this theme in a highly unusual. This becomes apparent in the way the characters are presented and portrayed throughout the film. Caterine claims that “alongside its scenes of blood and gore, Sin Nombre highlights the Maras’ humanity” (Caterine 43). Indeed, it does so as we do not only get confronted with their scary-looking tattoos, weapons and criminal acts, but we also see the gangsters living in a sense of peaceful community – e.g. preparing meals, listening to music and taking care of each other. This sensitive and perhaps communal side of the gang members is rarely seen in other movies. Another example of this perplexing portrayal of communality is with the MS-13’s leader, Lil’ Mago, who is shown as a loving father. Whereas, he is portrayed as unscrupulous, brutal and reckless, with his family and the gang members, who are considered part of this family, we see how Lil’ Mago considers them as a priority in his life. Furthermore, there is another example of community sense, in the portrayal of young gang member called Smiley. He wants to be part of the Mara because he wants to find love and support rather than being attracted to the lifestyle of violence. However, despite the scenes that show the gang members in a positive light, director Cary Joji Fukunaga, reminds us of their violent and illegal actions that characterize their daily existence.
