Excerpt from the Book

A. Public vs. Private Universities

The question is whether students who attend a private university are better off than students who attend a public college/university. Some professors, students and parents say that private education is not worth thousands and thousands of dollars each year. (Studying in the U.S.A costs between $5,000 and $30,000 per year + health insurance + books + travelling costs etc.) But one has to think about the reputation of such a private university. If one studies e.g. in Harvard successfully, he/she will be able to get almost every job and will probably be able to achieve a high standard of living. Furthermore, the student-to-teacher ratio is excellent on a private institution and one meets various interesting persons, making precious contacts for later on in life. Networking is actually a very important point, since classmates may eventually end up in high places and might help their friend to assure him/her a good job.

After all, it is “mass education” in public universities, whereas in private universities are “fewer students, lower student-faculty ratio,(…) more personalized support and study options, more personalized counseling & career services, high graduation rates.”

But now the question arises, how to finance studying on a (private) university or college and how to get a place there?
