A world that is becoming increasingly digital and complex due to fast-paced technology and constantly changing demands requires global rethinking. This transformation process presents project managers with the challenge of realigning strategies and adapting project management to the changed circumstances. This essay is mainly concerned with examining the current role of project management in today’s business environment. The assignment consists of two sections. A theoretical foundation is first laid regarding the definition of a project and its management to answer the research question. The second and major part outlines the importance of including aspects such as digitalization, sustainability, and agility into project management to meet the changing demands of humanity. A conclusion and a brief look into the future conclude the work. A detailed comparison between the role of project management in recent years and today is beyond the scope of this essay and, thus, cannot be covered in this paper.

Excerpt from the Book
Is it Time to rethink Project Management?
The way project managers work has refined over time, especially with the technological progress (T. Wu, 2021). With the ongoing improvement of technology and the introduction of digital tools, project management is getting more and more digitalized. The digitalization trend accelerated further due to the corona pandemic at the beginning of 2020 (T. Wu, 2021). To contain the spread of COVID-19 and protect their employees, many companies sent their employees to home office, thus increasing the trend of virtual collaboration and the demand for digital technology. This trend is leading to a new and advanced approach of project management, the so-called "digital project management" (T. Wu, 2021). However, digital project management refers not only to the introduction of digital tools and working on digital outcomes but illustrates the integration of digitalization into business strategies, business culture, and the way of working (T. Wu, 2021). Digital project managers are therefore expected to know how to combine the digital approach with the traditional techniques, thoroughly understand the digital transformation, and apply new technologies to optimize processes and meet people's changing needs (T. Wu, 2021).
