Excerpt from the Book

1. Introduction

More often than not, numerous students are faced with different challenges that undermine their performance in school, notwithstanding whether such students are ready to learn or not. The greatest challenge identified by this study is financial constraint. In this connection, Becker (1964) cited in Li and Qiu (2018), avers that, due to limited financial resources, parents of poor families are not able to invest adequately in their children’s education, which ultimately affects their children’s academic achievement.

While this state of affairs is prevalent in all parts of the world, this is more so, in poor countries where institutional corruption has kept vast majority of the citizens poor. As a result, numerous students inevitably come from poor social and economic background. Lakner and Schoch (2020), reveal that 40% of Sub-Saharan African population lives in extreme poverty, accounting for two-thirds of the global extreme poor population. In sub-Saharan Africa, the challenges that monetary poverty possess on academic achievement and educational outcomes is glaring. The level of poverty in the region is higher than any other region. Consequently, it affects the quality of life of majority, including their academic achievement and educational outcomes.
