Excerpt from the Book
1.1 Background:
Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) were recognized as key drivers of economic growth, job creation, and poverty reduction in many developing countries, including Ethiopia. Within the SME sector, women-owned businesses had gained increasing attention due to their potential to contribute to inclusive economic development and women's empowerment. However, women owned SMEs often faced unique challenges that hindered their performance and growth. Understanding these challenges and their impact on the performance of women-owned SMEs was crucial for designing effective policies and interventions to support their success. Achtenhagen, L., Naldi, L., & Melin, L. (2013).
Dire Dawa City, located in eastern Ethiopia, was known for its vibrant entrepreneurial ecosystem. However, the specific factors that affected the performance of women-owned SMEs in this context remained relatively unexplored. Therefore, this study aimed to fill this research gap by examining the factors that influenced the performance of women-owned SMEs in Dire Dawa City.
