This term paper was created as part of a literature seminar on biblical stories. It deals with the modern adaptation of Christian dualism in the Amazon Prime series 'Good Omens'.
The TV series Good Omens (2019) is a third-person omniscient narration of the demon Crowley and the angel Aziraphale who have been living on Earth for over 6,000 years. Since they have loved their earthly way of life and surprisingly have become friends over time, they want to rescue the world by preventing the apocalypse, the end of the world, that will cause a war between Heaven and Hell.
Since the concept of Heaven is understood as the reward of good people after their death and Hell is seen as a punishment for bad people after their death, it is very uncommon that the respective messengers of Heaven (Aziraphale) and Hell (Crowley) are friends.
This paper aims to show that Christian dualism, known as the idea of Good and Evil but nothing in between, gets fundamentally challenged in the series 'Good Omens' (2019). It is particularly shown in the individual characters of the two protagonists in contrast to other characters who fit in the duality of fundamental Christianity.
This term paper provides a brief introduction to the topic. The analysis will show how the protagonists Crowley and Aziraphale especially challenge the dualistic concepts of Good and Evil. This will become even clearer by juxtaposing them with two characters who abide to their respective sides uncompromisingly; Gabriel and Beelzebub.

Chapter Summaries
1 Introduction: This introductory chapter establishes the context of the paper by discussing the prevalence of religious adaptations in entertainment and their various functions, drawing on Hutcheon's (2006) work on adaptation theory. It introduces the TV series Good Omens (2019) and its premise: the unlikely friendship between an angel and a demon who team up to prevent the apocalypse. The chapter sets the stage for the paper's central argument: that Good Omens fundamentally challenges Christian dualism through its characters and narrative.
2 Christian Dualism: This chapter delves into the concept of dualism, specifically its application within Christian theology. It explores historical and philosophical perspectives on the duality of good and evil, referencing the works of Thales, Socrates, and others. The chapter examines the traditional Christian narrative of the Fall of Lucifer and the concept of original sin, contrasting it with the idea of free will and humanity's capacity for both good and evil. It establishes a foundation for analyzing how the characters in Good Omens deviate from these established theological frameworks.
2.1 The Picture of Heaven and Hell: This subchapter further elaborates on the Christian dualistic worldview by exploring the contrasting depictions of Heaven and Hell. It draws on historical and theological interpretations of these realms, emphasizing the stark dichotomy between eternal reward (Heaven) and eternal punishment (Hell) as a consequence of adhering to or rejecting divine values. This serves to highlight the binary nature of traditional Christian thought that Good Omens directly confronts.
