This paper explores the impact of social media, especially Instagram and Twitter, on the discourse surrounding the BLM movement. The focus will mainly be on the framing of the crisis of racial inequality in the United States. Main questions are: Can the movement be seen as resulting out of a crisis, and why is the #BlackLivesMatter hashtag still important? What online and offline effects did the #BlackLivesMatter hashtag have? Through an examination of how social media has been used to frame the crisis, this paper tries to explain the ways in which this new media has been used to mobilize support, build community, and challenge the status quo.

The United States of America has long grappled with systemic racial inequality and social injustice, particularly towards black Americans. The racial inequality began many years ago and continues until this day. Despite historic efforts towards achieving civil rights, the plight of black people in America has continued to be a contentious issue, with police brutality and discriminatory policies remaining persistent problems. In recent years, the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement has emerged as a powerful force for change, driven largely by the use of social media platforms to bring awareness to the issue of systemic racism and its impact on Black lives.

Excerpt from the Book

3. 1. Analyzing social media cases and the individuals behind them

In Hashtag Activism, pictures and videos play a big role. The #BlackLivesMatter hashtag is also not just supported by text messages, but by videos and pictures to make the message easier to grasp. Especially on Instagram, there were many infographics “about health, educational, and economic racial disparities coupled with narratives by those personally impacted by said disparities sought to reify this reality for those outside of the movement” (Weber et al. 16-17.). In the following, I will focus on four different examples from Twitter and Instagram and on their symbolic value. The examples are chosen randomly throughout the whole time period as of the beginning of the#BlackLivesMatter hashtag.

Theocharis et al. focussed their research in the year 2015 on organizing the different typologies of protest content on Twitter. They could define three typologies: (1) political mobilization; (2) political organization and coordination of offline protest action; (3) political conversation and distribution of information (Theocharis et al. 203-204.). These forms are not static, but can shift and overlap. You can see many posts that match these four typologies, such as authentic pictures of activists and calls for coming demonstrations.

One exemplary post we will take a closer look at is the post from the Campaign “Stand Up To Racism” on Twitter (Fig. 1). They are not just campaigning against racism, but fascism, Islamophobia and antisemitism as well. In the picture, the campaign works with strong colors. This supports the message of a strong and back-fighting community. The color yellow typically symbolizes energy, joy and positivity - in this case, it emphasizes the energy of the Black community. The words “Let’s build the antiracist resistance” encourage the agency and the willingness to fight against injustice and racism. In the corner of the picture, you can see a woman standing exemplary for the unity. Giving the campaign a real and authentic face can evoke emotional resonance, as empathy and willing to connect, by the audience.
