Zusammenfassung Leseprobe Details

Aiming to explore the evaluation of marriages in George Eliot's "Middlemarch", this paper delves into how perspective, contrast and correspondence relations, and authorial narration shape our understanding of matrimonial relationships.

Love and marriage, cornerstones of human interaction and social bonding, are frequently reflected in literature. This reflection often presents marriage as the blissful conclusion of a love story, marking a joyous milestone for the characters involved. This portrayal, however, is not a universal literary standard. For instance, in novels like "Middlemarch", characters marry early, fostering an exploration of marriage's dynamics, successes, and failures. In addressing these complexities, this paper contributes to a deeper understanding of Eliot's depiction of marriage and its function as a narrative tool.

Objectives and Research Themes

This paper examines how the narrative aspects of perspective, contrast and correspondence relations, and authorial narration function as tools for evaluating the depictions of marriage in George Eliot's novel Middlemarch. By analyzing the relationships between Dorothea and Casaubon, Rosamond and Lydgate, and Mary and Fred, the study seeks to determine how these stylistic and structural elements influence the reader's perception of marital success or failure.

  • Narratological analysis of perspective and mental worldviews
  • Evaluation through contrast and correspondence relations
  • The role of the authorial narrator and ironic distance
  • Comparative study of three central marriages in Middlemarch
  • The impact of socioeconomic factors vs. personal trust in marriage

Excerpt from the Book

3.2 Contrasts and Correspondences of the marriages

This chapter will contrast the couples' getting to know each other, as well as their individual low points of their relationships.

Dorothea and Casaubon meet at a dinner. Although they barely speak to each other until the time of their engagement, Dorothea sees him as a "perfect match" (Eliot: 13). She desires a husband who can teach her something (cf. Eliot: 7) so that she can support him in his work, but also achieve her goal of a high education (cf. Eliot: 19). She longs to devote her life to something valuable (cf. Lagerspetz: 211). Casaubon on the other hand, desires someone to read to him in the evening, but otherwise wants to devote himself only to his work (cf. Eliot: 12). Although Casaubon already has considerable doubts about the marriage, they marry shortly after they first met (cf. Eliot: 58f.).

During their first meeting, Rosamond realizes that Lydgate fits her ideal image of a man: He is not from Middlemarch and of a wealthy family (cf. Eliot: 76). While Rosamond is of marriageable age, Lydgate still wants to devote himself to his scientific work and is not yet interested in marriage (cf. Eliot: 105). Nevertheless, he emphasizes that he admires Rosamond (cf. Eliot: 105). A short time after, it becomes clear that they both want to marry only for love (cf. Eliot: 105), while intimacy develops between them in private conversations (cf. Eliot: 168). Slightly later, they marry (cf. Eliot: 259). The way how Fred and Mary get to know each other is not treated in as much detail in the novel as it is for the other characters, but it strongly resembles Rosamond and Lydgate's ideas.
