The rapid process of urbanization in developing countries accompanied by a lack of adequate and affordable housing provision is one of the 21st century's main development challenges. By 2025, nearly half of the expanded population will live in cities as a result of sustained urbanization, putting pressure on the formal housing provision. In the Oromia region of Ethiopia, particularly in Burayu sub-city, owning a house is considered a significant achievement. However, there are various challenges faced by residents during construction, including inadequate quality control of materials, lack of technical expertise, and inadequate supervision of construction sites. These challenges have led to the construction of unsafe and sub-standard buildings, leading to loss of lives and property.
The research seeks to identify the challenges facing residents during the construction of their homes in the Burayu subcity of Ethiopia. The research therefore focuses on these specific questions: What are the challenges faced by residents during the construction of their own homes in the Burayu sub-city of Ethiopia? How do these challenges affect the safety and quality of buildings constructed in the region and what policy directions can be put forward to address these challenges?
