Do niche parties include a higher value of their partybase and more opportunities of grass-root decision-making in their organizational framework?
To find an approriate answer to this research question, a comparative case study is conducted. The two cases are represented by two parties, namely the german green party; Bündnis 90/Die Grünen, symbolically standing for a niche party and the german christian democratic party; CDU, standing for a typical mainstream party in Germany. The method of the presented analysis follows a qualitative approach. In consists more specifically in a qualitative content analysis after Udo Kuckartz, in which data about the organizational framework of both parties will be analysed.

Ezrow et al. 2011 suppose that, the organisational framework of niche parties could offer a greater base for a close relationship between partybase and partelites due to more integrated mechanism of grass-root decision-making.

Excerpt from the Book

4.1 The statutes of Bündnis 90/Die Grünen

In the party statutes of the green party, the definition of the basic structure as well as the associated organizational regulations of their internal order can be found. The statutes of the green party of Germany were last amended at a federal delegates conference in 2022 (Der Bundeswahlleiter 2022, p.3.). They clearly state at the beginning that programs and election platforms are an expression of the common political will (Der Bundeswahlleiter 2022, p. 3.). Speaking just about formal presentation, one can say, that the statute of the green party appears generally much shorter and less detailed.

In principle, anyone can become a member of the party, who accepts the statutes, the basic values and the program (Der Bundeswahlleiter 2022, p. 4.). A free membership, with limited voting rights, but also with connections to other parties, is possible with Bündnis 90/Die Grünen (Probst 2013, p. 523.). This shows that the access possibilities to get involved in the party are very low. On the other side, it can be stated that the green party base can be considered relatively open and fluid, consisting in the party not being really able to exerzise measures against members (Rüdig/Sajuria 2012, p. 531.).
