In opposite to these negative interpretations, I will attempt to prove that the protagonist does experience personal development which might lead him to enjoy a positive future. Firstly, the essay will indicate the manner in which Gregor Keuschnig copes with the challenge of discovering hitherto unknown emotional facets of his personality (section II). Thereafter, section III illustrates the alteration in Keuschnig’s thinking towards the conventional order of things; then section IV investigates Keuschnig’s change of attitude regarding those things he feels are significant. Finally, section V deals with an alternative relationship between the individual and society.

Excerpt from the Book
III. From a secure system to a vivid individuality
Until Keuschnig’s revelation of his new found identity (and partially even afterwards), he tries to fight the anticipated discovery by seeking for a new order in his life, as his dream has made the former things invalid. He envies policemen, the symbols of law and order, for their prescriptive official regulations that provide them with direction: “Im Ernstfall würde jeder von ihnen genau wissen, was er als nächstes tun müßte; […] und es konnte ihnen nichts mehr zustoßen, weil sie für alles schon von vornherein eine REIHENFOLGE hatten”20. Despite questioning the meaning of such an organization, he maintains this approach owing to the lack of alternatives:21
Thus, he firstly develops a mania for cleanliness and order23 that for instance changes an atmosphere, which is supposed to be romantic, into an impersonal ritual: “das-den-Korken aus-der-Flasche-Ziehen, das-die Serviette-auf-die-Knie-Legen, […] das-die-Hose-über-den Stuhl-Legen; das-sich-nebeneinander-ins-Bett-Legen; das-das-Glied-in-die-Scheide Aufnehmen”24. Furthermore, Keuschnig tries to escape into the routine of his job as a press attaché. As his profession requires him to promote a special image of Austria by countering one cliché with another one that is based on certain regulations, Keuschnig is capable to rely on existing patterns which nurture comfortable security.
