Excerpt from the Book
4.2 Analysis
The song starts with the lyrics “Dear Mr. President”. In these lines, Pink greets the president, which is still unknown, formally. However, the next lines “Come take a walk with me. Let’s pretend, we’re just two people and you’re not better than me.”, in which she invites him on a walk and puts him down to a lower level, or as she calls it, her level, are contrasting to the formality. And though she states that Bush is better than her, it is questionable if she actually means it, or if she only says it because he is the president and he thinks so of himself.
“I’d like to ask you some questions if we can speak honestly”, with these lines Pink promises, that while she is going to ask him questions, she will be honest, however, she expects Bush to be honest as well. The “if” shows though, that she does not trust him to tell the truth.
“What do you feel when you see all the homeless on the streets?”, is the first question Pink asks the President. And even though, homelessness has been a big problem in America for a long time, it is the first hint, to whom the song is addressed to. Because Pink is referring to Hurricane Katrina, which took place in August 2005 and caused a lot of damage. Among the economic damage, which was even larger than from 9/11, and thousands of people getting hurt and dying, a big problem in the aftermath of the hurricane, were the thousands of people without a place to live. Bush held a speech about the hurricane and how the government was going to help, however, his reaction came very late and many people thought that he was not recognizing the seriousness of the matter and criticized the minimum help.
