This paper will put its focus on tense and aspect and how the German-speaking writer Franz Kafka availed himself of these particular functions to achieve his goals he pursued with his texts: to puzzle the reader and to leave him wondering about what to believe is the reality they are living in.
The first section of this paper will be dealing with the general terminology and briefly explain the terms tense and aspect which will be crucial and essential to the understanding. Tense will then again be split up into past tense and the (historical) present tense.
After that, there will be a short depiction of Franz Kafka’s life and work, followed by rough summaries of his works “A Country Doctor” as well as “The Burrow” on which the focus will be put to demonstrate how tense and aspect are used in order to achieve his goals with the reader.
The main part of this paper will be on the usage of said focus on tense and aspect in Kafka’s work. The terminology out of section (2) will be picked up and be put into connection and context with the two stories of Kafka’s to demonstrate how Kafka’s world works and what makes it so difficult to tell his (fictional) world apart from the one that the reader knows as reality.
The key question shall be what the peculiar usage of tense and aspect is which is a distinct feature of Kafka’s texts affects the reader, and how they make the reader think about what he is reading or if he even realizes what is going on as far as tense and aspect is concerned. Is he able to process this flood of information that is headed his way? We will see that there is plenty to think about, plenty to take into account when reading both The Burrow and A Country Doctor.

Chapter Summaries
Introduction: This introductory chapter sets the stage for the paper by establishing the central argument: that the use of tense and aspect in Kafka's work is not arbitrary but serves a specific purpose in creating a disorienting and ambiguous reading experience. It outlines the paper's structure, promising to define key terms, briefly discuss Kafka's work, and then delve into a detailed analysis of tense and aspect usage in "A Country Doctor" and "The Burrow."
Terminology: This chapter lays the groundwork for the analysis by defining key grammatical concepts: tense and aspect. It distinguishes between grammatical tense and the concept of time itself, explaining that tense is a grammatical category that expresses the temporal relations of events, while time is a more abstract, continuous flow. The chapter clarifies the difference between narrating time and narrated time, illustrating how these can diverge to create particular narrative effects. Different speeds of narrating time are discussed (ellipsis, summary, scene, pause) along with distinctions between story level and discourse level chronology, highlighting how shifts in tense signal these narrative techniques. Finally, it focuses on the past and present tenses, setting the stage for their later analysis in Kafka's work.
Kafka's work: This section provides a concise overview of Franz Kafka's life and work, setting the context for the analysis that follows. While it mentions "A Country Doctor" and "The Burrow," it doesn't offer detailed plot summaries; rather, it prepares the reader for the subsequent close reading of these stories with respect to tense and aspect.
Usage of time and tense in Kafka's works: This chapter forms the core of the paper, directly applying the theoretical framework established in the "Terminology" section to a detailed analysis of how tense and aspect function in Kafka's "A Country Doctor" and "The Burrow." It will demonstrate how Kafka's manipulation of these grammatical features contributes to the unsettling and ambiguous nature of his narratives, creating effects of disorientation and uncertainty for the reader. The chapter will likely present specific examples from both stories to illustrate its claims.
