On the following pages I will try to point out the key role nations still play today. What one associates with a nation forms the national identity which is – for many maybe subconsciously – a crucial element of the individual identity. In my opinion nations will always strive for nation states as they guarantee most reliably the protection of national and therefore personal interests such as cultural determination, security, political self-determination and financial and economic prospect.

Kosovo is a recent example where the ‘denationalisation’ described in the paragraph above seems to be inversed. The former Yugoslavian province has become Europe’s youngest state, not only chronologically but also demographically. What motivates this young generation to stand in for a nation that has so little to offer to them? I will deal with the two sides of nationalism and describe how a moderate sense of nationality radicalised and drove the Balkans into the Kosovo crisis. Despite the negative consequences overreaching nationalism can bring about I will talk about the necessity of national identities and explain why the nation is not an outdated concept.

Objectives and Research Themes

This paper explores the enduring relevance of the nation-state in a globalized world, using the birth of Kosovo as a focal point to examine the complex relationship between national identity, conflict, and the aspiration for sovereign statehood.

  • The persistence of national identity in the era of globalization.
  • The psychological and political drivers behind the creation of nation-states.
  • The dual nature of nationalism as a unifying force and a potential source of conflict.
  • The historical and political development of Kosovo’s independence.
  • The role of industrialization and modernization in the formation of modern states.

Excerpt from the Book

3.1. Background Information: Kosovo

Located on the Balkans among Serbia, Macedonia, Albania and Montenegro, Kosovo became an autonomous region, respectively province of Serbia within the Socialist Republic of Yugoslavia after the Second World War. Kosovo is populated by a majority of Albanians of about 90%, whereas a minority of Serbs (7%) mainly lives in northern regions near the Serbian border. Although the Kosovo Albanians always felt strongly connected with their origin Albania, a separatist movement striving for the independence of Kosovo or the unification with Albania hardly existed unlike in other regions of Europe or the Middle East as the IRA in Northern Ireland, ETA in the Basque region of Spain, the PLO in Palestine and others around the globe.

But does the lack a nationalist terrorist group alone reveal a lack of national identity in a time when almost each minority had its separatist organisation? Did the Kosovo Albanians really not care weather they belonged to Serbia, Albania or were a state of their own?

Perhaps one can explain this situation with fact that especially “under the reign of Marshall Tito [Josip Broz, dictator of the Republic of Yugoslavia] the people of Kosovo enjoyed a remarkable amount of self-administration, particularly since the sixties and the constitution of 1974” (Teodosijevic 1996). Apparently there was simply nobody interfering too much with the Kosovar interests, making the two questions raised above superficial. Kosovo already had a state of its own – informally maybe, but with good conditions of making this de facto status also a de jure one.

Summary of Chapters

1. Introduction: The introduction outlines the persistence of the nation-state concept despite globalizing trends, setting the stage for an analysis of Kosovo's independence as a case study.

3. Kosovo: The Birth of a Nation State: This section provides a historical overview of Kosovo and investigates how regional tensions and the pursuit of self-determination culminated in the declaration of independence.

4. Conclusion: The concluding chapter synthesizes the findings, noting that while internationalization is a strong trend, the desire for nation-states remains a powerful force for younger generations seeking security and identity.
