In social work, closeness and distance play a very important role as they are fundamental components of interpersonal contact. Every social worker is confronted with proximity and distance on a daily basis. The questions of closeness and distance are omnipresent in the practice of social work in everyday interactions with clients, as well as with colleagues.

It aims at one of the central dimensions in the question of the self-understanding of social work and is usually understood and lived very differently. Some insist on closeness, they insist that social pedagogical action is determined by the quality of the relationship work, the engagement and the building of trust. The others, on the other hand, see the professional ability to distance as the actual characteristic of social pedagogical action.

In the following, I would like to address various points on this topic. To begin with, it must first be clarified what is meant by the terms proximity and distance in relation to social work. Then I will describe in more detail the role that closeness and distance play in everyday interaction. In the next part, pedagogical closeness and distance will be examined in more detail based on the work with adolescents. Furthermore, proximity and distance will be described in more detail using the example of lifeworld-oriented social work. In the last part, the concept of structured openness is briefly introduced.

Excerpt from the Book

3. Proximity and distance in everyday life

The term everyday life encompasses the reality of the self-evident, the familiar, the closeness in which people know themselves to be challenged and to belong. In everyday life, people rely on each other, are connected in mutual expectation, in confirmation and disappointment, as well as in positive and negative feelings. One acts in the reality of shared, common experience, in pragmatic relationship patterns and working alliances. The coping tasks that arise in everyday life are determined by proximity and distance - by the everyday familiar togetherness. (cf. Thiersch 2007: 30)

Our everyday life consists of a network of very different constellations of proximity and distance. Proximity and distance characterize above all the different relationship patterns in everyday life. Different mixtures of proximity and distance determine the profile of different roles, as well as the structure of a role in itself. Father Mother, friend, grandparents, work colleague, everyone has a different role and represents different areas. Areas in which one is trusted, open to each other and dependent on each other and areas that are unimportant in the relationship and are omitted. (cf. Thiersch 2007: 30f)

The mixtures of proximity and distance between the roles and in the roles are not given forever. They must be determined again and again in the development of relationships and in the sequence of the phase of life. These changes often give rise to differences in the interpretation and intention of action of proximity and distance. Since this is always subjectively felt and interpreted. Everyone has a different sense of closeness and distance. The closeness that one person feels may be embarrassing and too intrusive for the other. A very well-known problem in interpersonal love relationship is the point of contention "You don't love me as much as I love you". Such differences can very easily turn into conflicts. (cf. Thiersch 2007: 31)
