Summary Excerpt Details

This work will have a closer look at the cool-climate country Poland and the warm-climate country Portugal. The working assumption is, that the winemaking sector in cool-climate countries benefits from global warming effects, whereas warm-climate countries have to face major negative impacts and do have a higher urgency for adaption measures.

Climate change is omnipresent. Its impacts on ecological, economic and social dimensions are significant. Also, in viticulture climate change has a major impact and affects the winemaker’s practice both in the short-term and in the long-term. Nowadays, the wine-growing area in Europe is mainly situated at a latitude between 30° and 50°N (northern hemisphere). Climate change, specifically global warming, affects those boundaries and challenges the current viticulture as well as traditional pathways. The impact of climate change will not take course in a homogenous way. The wine-growing regions are affected differently, partly with more positive or more negative outcome.

Research Objectives and Themes

This work explores the diverging impacts of climate change on viticulture in cool-climate Poland and warm-climate Portugal, testing the assumption that the former may benefit from warming while the latter faces significant existential threats and a high urgency for adaptation.

  • Comparative analysis of cool-climate vs. warm-climate viticulture
  • Mechanisms of global warming and its specific impact on grapevine phenology
  • Evaluation of climate indices (HI and Winkler Index) for regional suitability
  • Strategic adaptation requirements for sustainable wine production

Excerpt from the Book

Climate Change Impact on Viticulture

The presence of climate change and its impact on viticulture are real. Global warming causes problems for the traditional wine-producing regions and shifts the viticulture zone northwards, e.g. the Netherlands and Denmark in Europe. Some of Europe´s most important wine regions - such as Tuscany and Bordeaux - will deal with major challenges, whereas rising temperatures will make grape growing viable in places that are currently considered to be uneconomical or not suitable for wine-growing. For cool-climate areas this might go along with an improvement of the grape quality because of more favorable thermal conditions. For warm-climate areas, rising temperatures become critical for existing varieties and viticulture but might be beneficial for the sweet wine production. In any case, increased dryness will have a strong negative impact on wine production and quality in some parts of southern Europe, particularly in latitudes southward of 40°N, including Portugal (Malheiro et al. 2010).

Summary of Chapters

1. Introduction: Presents the research scope concerning the impact of global warming on European viticulture and defines the comparative focus on Poland and Portugal.

2. Review of the Literature: Discusses the mechanisms of global warming, explains common climate indices, and details the specific viticultural and industrial conditions in Poland and Portugal.

3. Discussion: Synthesizes the findings, highlighting the dual nature of climate change as an opportunity for cool-climate regions and a serious threat requiring adaptation for warm-climate regions.

4. Publication bibliography: Lists the academic sources and data references used for the analysis.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the fundamental focus of this publication?

The publication examines how global climate change affects wine production, using a comparative analysis of Poland (cool-climate) and Portugal (warm-climate) to illustrate diverse regional outcomes.

What are the primary themes discussed in this work?

The core themes include the definition and causes of climate change, the shift of viticultural zones, the use of climate-based indices like the Huglin and Winkler indexes, and the necessity of adaptation strategies.

What is the primary research goal of this paper?

The goal is to determine whether cool-climate countries like Poland might gain advantages from rising temperatures, while assessing the potential negative impacts and adaptation needs for warm-climate producers like Portugal.

Which scientific methods are employed for this analysis?

The work utilizes a comprehensive literature review, assessing data from climate scenarios (such as A1B, RCP4.5, and RCP8.5), industry market reports, and established viticultural indices to evaluate future regional suitability.

What topics are covered in the main section of the book?

The main section covers the causes of global warming, the impact of rising temperatures on vine phenology and grape chemistry, and detailed country-specific chapters on the wine industries and viticulture in Poland and Portugal.

How would you describe this work using keywords?

The work is best characterized by terms such as Climate Change, Viticulture, Sustainable Adaptation, Regional Wine Economics, and Environmental Impact Assessment.

How does climate change influence viticulture specifically in Poland?

According to the text, Poland is experiencing an extension of the growing season and improved thermal conditions, potentially allowing for more viable Vitis vinifera cultivation, though new risks like pests and yield loss due to drought remain.

What specific challenges does Portugal face regarding its wine industry?

Portugal faces significant risks from extreme heat and dryness, which threaten to make traditional viticulture unsustainable in certain regions, necessitating urgent long-term adaptation strategies to manage terroir and grape variety limitations.
