Excerpt from the book

4. Problems associated with income inequality

Income inequality leads to several different problems arising at a societal level, as well as at a personal level. An international journal of labour research (International Labour Office, 2014) concludes that people with a higher income have a longer lifetime than people with lower incomes. Furthermore, people with a lower income consume more than people with a higher income, leading to a concentration of wealth at the top 10%, which in turn leads to lower demand and so to a decrease in productive investments (International Labour Office, 2014). Wilkinson and Pickett (2009) state that income inequality is strongly linked to the following problems mental health and drug use, physical health, low education, teenage pregnancies, violence, obesity, and crime. With reference to this, income inequality is not just bad for the people in the lower class, but in fact for everybody.

Income inequality increases the importance of individual status in a society, this is connected to a higher consumption of status relevant goods and leads to a higher orientation on material goods (Wilkinson & Pickett, 2009). In addition, income inequality is linked to political inequality, in a strong unequal distribution of wealth, higher income groups can easier influence political decision makers (International Labour Office, 2014).
