Excerpt from the Book
2.1 The Ecological Environment in the context of business
Planet earth and its environment is the basis of our existence. Nevertheless it is harmed and polluted by human beings and corporations in relation to resources, consumption and profits. Conspicuously often, the media reports about environmental scandals and catastrophes, such as the nuclear disaster in Fukushima.
It is hardly surprising that there is a strong connection between the global ecological problem and business activities throughout the world. For the production of goods, companies are removing resources from the ecological environment, which often can’t be replaced. Resource depletion is a present problem that has largely affect on both current and coming generations. Furthermore harmful production processes cause pollution, water contamination and other ecological harm. In addition production processes result waste products, which are often considered to be hazardous. After all, one of the greatest current issues is known as climate change and global warming (Hamilton & Webster, 2012, pp.341-43).
Around 40% of the carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions are caused by business. Furthermore, energy generation is rated as the main polluter concerning to greenhouse gases (WWF Global, 2014).
The aim of a corporation’s existence is, to produce and provide goods and services, with the main objective to realize profits. This is why the question arises, what a corporation motivates to invest both time and money in environmental-friendly production processes and other ecological improvements.
