The automotive industry is changing. Home-markets of world-known automakers become saturated. Many companies seek new opportunities and chances in new markets.

The major future challenges for JLR are from economic nature. Economic growth in Europe is stagnating which leads to moderately increasing sales. Additionally, there is pressure to adhere to environmental standards which complicates competition further.

Although Europe is a mature market with comprehensive intellectual property rights, and low corruption, without satisfying growth, JLR needs to seek new markets.

In general, there are 3 types of motives for companies to engage in foreign direct investments (FDI), market-seeking motives, resource- or asset-seeking motives and efficiency-seeking motives.

Excerpt from the book

3.1 The Possible Influence of National Culture

A joint-venture is the creation of a jointly owned company with a defined purpose (Cavusgil, 2017). As it can involve 2 or more partner companies from 2 or more different countries (Cavusgil, 2017), a joint-venture is likely to have a (national and corporate) cultural variety which indeed must be managed as it can hinder reaching the joint-venture objectives (Hofstede, 2010). Hofstede (2010: p. 6) defines national culture as ‘the collective programming of the mind that distinguishes the members of one group … of people from others’ he further outlines, that the ‘mental patterns’ (Hofstede, 2010: p. 5), which people acquire in their early childhood, are patterns of thinking, feeling and potential acting. Hofstede (2010: p. 25) adds that ‘managers and leaders, as well as the people they work with, are part of national societies’. Consequently, national culture variety is associated with different values managers from different countries can have and which could influence them at decision-taking (Hofstede, 2010). Hofstede (2010) described national culture differences with 6 dimensions, which can be seen in the comparison of China and the UK in figure 6.
