Excerpt from the Book
Conformity
Conformity deals with matching attitudes or behaviors and beliefs among two groups so that they both become a social norm. On the other hand, models are known to be implicit and having unmentioned rules which are mostly common among some individuals (Cialdini, & Goldstein, 2004 pg 621). The beliefs also guide how these individuals’ interactions with the other like-minded groups. Researchers have noted that tendency to conform mostly occurs when there are smaller groups or in the society as a whole. The result of conformity which has been observed to emanate from subtle unconscious and influences to direct as well as overpressure which also occurs socially. Conformity is also known to have the presence when people are in groups and also when one is alone. A good example is when people voluntarily follow social norms. Another example is when people are dining or watching television; there is an observed difference regarding how they agree on ideas which indicate conformity occurs when people are in groups.
There is also another notion where people are noted to conform to a desire which comes for security most probably to be found within a group. A typical situation is in which shares similar characteristics like age, culture, religion, or even educational status. In psychology, the term conformity is often seen as groupthink (Klucharev et al., 2011 pg 11940). Group think has also been observed to come in the form of an organized pattern in the form of thought that is characterized by certain factors like self-deception. The factors also occur to be in the form of forced manufacture and terms of consent, as well as conformity to group values. The issue of ethics which have been observed and seen it ignores any realistic appraisal among other courses of action.
