During World War I a wealthy British woman, having already published three books, trains as a nurse and while serving in France meets a soldier whom she marries in 1919. After some time she comes to the realization that her marriage is not working. By 1932 she is divorced.
Her name is Vera Frances Bryce Salomons. She was born into a Jewish family in England in 1888, at a time when religious freedom and women’s rights could not be taken for granted. She was a cosmopolitan, a well-versed traveler to destinations such as Italy, Switzerland, France and the British Mandate for Palestine/Israel. In Jerusalem she met Leon A. Mayer, a professor of archaeology and Islamic art. She soon developed a passion for Islamic art. Years later she decided to build a museum in the heart of Jerusalem, the L. A. Mayer Museum for Islamic Art.
Vera Salomons undertook philanthropic work among Arabs and Jews and strove for mutual understanding and tolerance in the region. She was an intensely private, self-effacing woman who left very few documents or photos of herself to posterity. Attempts at a Biography: The Discrete Life of Vera Salomons was written to keep Vera Salomons’ work and mission alive as a source of inspiration for future generations.

Excerpt from the Book

A Trip to Palestine

At the end of 1925, Vera Bryce Salomons and her husband went on a trip to Palestine. Earlier that year Vera’s father had passed away. His loss must have been devastating for Vera since the two had enjoyed a very close relationship. Why did Vera choose to go to Palestine? Was she looking to alleviate her emotional pain? Did she perhaps intend to revive the family tradition by following in the footsteps of her great uncle who had journeyed to Palestine several times almost one hundred years earlier? Or was Vera Salomons a Zionist?

As we know, Vera Salomons was born at the end of the 19th century, which was not only a century of social and legal change but also of new political perspectives regarding British attitudes towards Jews in Central/Eastern Europe and the Middle East. The Jews' plight in Russia, the Damascus Affair (1840) and other anti-Semitic incidents led British politicians of different creeds to offer Jews their special protection and aid. This strategy remained Britain’s principal concern for many years, ultimately finding expression in the Balfour Declaration of 1917. In 1918, British Zionist women set up the Federation of Women Zionists of Great Britain and Ireland, which two years later (1920) amalgamated with the newly-created Women’s International Zionist Organization. However, there is no evidence that Vera Salomons was ever at the helm of a Zionist organization. “Apart from a collection of press cuttings about Zionism on the shelves of the Broomhill library, there is nothing to indicate any previous interest in the land of her fathers.” It is more likely that the strong pro-Jewish attitude of her nation, combined with her education to philanthropy and open-mindedness, made her decide to travel to Mandatory Palestine.
