3. Details and conclusions of The British Premier League TV deal

After now having an overview about the two major factors supply and demand, those two aspects will be set in context to the new British Premier League TV deal.

In 2015, the British Premier League (BPL) announced the new signing of the TV rights contract for the years 2016 and following. The first season with an impact will be the 2016/2017 season. The amount is expected to be about 13 Billion US$ including the international TV rights. The domestic rights in the BPL will be around 7.9 Billion US$ for a three year period. This results in an annual turnover of around 4.3 Billion US$ (cf. Massive new English Premier League TV Deal; 2015).

According to BBC, the domestic and international rights were auctioned in a highly competitive way to maximize the price. On the domestic market, the matches will be transmitted by two providers, Sky and BT (cf. BBC Article TV rights; 2015).

This is an increase of about 70 percent to the old contract. Comparing to other sport leagues from the US, the BPL TV deal will be the most lucrative TV deal in the world. Comparing with the National Basketball League NBA in the US, the current TV earnings are at a level of around 2.66 Billion US$. This is a good example to show the relation between the most lucrative US TV deal and the new BPL TV deal. The result of this new TV deal is that the income of all BPL clubs will massively increase with the new period.
