As a student of English and Spanish Studies, I agree that the linguistic phenomenon of code switching deserves attention for two reasons: Not only does it seem to play such an important role in linguistics, but also in everyday life. That is why politicians or even natives speakers should be aware of the extent of the sociolinguistic aspects in language development in English-Spanish bilingual communities.
Furthermore, I wish to examine the famous term “Spanglish” and the change in attitudes towards the present concept since its emergence. I will discuss the sociolinguistic aspects and the term’s evolution in more detail in the last chapter of my paper. Referring to the particular identity of Hispanics living in the U.S., being able to manage two different languages, bilinguals are capable to code switch within their languages.
For this reason, it is essential to define code switching, including its three types of interaction, in the first place in order to distinguish the term in comparison to other linguistic phenomena, such as loan translation or loan words and lexical borrowing, with which one can easily comprehend. Because of the prevalence of lexical and grammatical theories, which have dealt with code switching for the last three decades, I have decided to focus on what are considered to be the three most relevant ones at present linguistic discourse: The Equivalence Constraint, The Free Morpheme Constraint and The Matrix Language Model.
In the last part of my paper, I will take a closer look at the term Spanglish in reference to its various implications and what can be included in its today’s definition. Additionally, I will include some examples of the use of Spanglish, in other words Spanish-English code switching.

Diese Arbeit untersucht das sprachwissenschaftliche Phänomen des Code-Switchings innerhalb von englisch-spanischsprachigen Gemeinschaften in den USA. Ziel ist es, den Begriff des Code-Switchings präzise von anderen Sprachkontaktphänomenen wie dem lexikalischen Entleihen abzugrenzen und die wichtigsten theoretischen Erklärungsansätze kritisch zu beleuchten, um das kontroverse Konzept des "Spanglish" aus soziolinguistischer Perspektive zu analysieren.

4 Theoretical Approaches About the Use of Code switching
Perhaps the most contentious feature found among Spanish-English bilinguals, as well as among the polemics of Spanglish in general is the phenomenon of code switching. It represents the linguistic development concerning the usage of a “mixture language”, as to say the coexistence of the Spanish and English in one sentence, in bilingual U.S. communities. According to Lipski: “Code switching reaches its highest level of interweaving – which is equally of great interest to linguists and the source of the most vehement criticism- when both languages are combined within the space of a single sentence,…” (Lipski 2008:230). While code switching, bilinguals embed words, partial or entire sentences of one language into another, without any interference of their grammatical systems. During the interaction of CS, both languages do not undergo any changes; neither in terms of morphological, nor phonological or syntactic aspects.
Furthermore, the previous arguments are, on the one hand, in favor of bilinguals’ linguistic competence in CS. On the other hand, they have recently aimed to disprove former assumptions claiming that Spanglish is exclusively used by uncultured Hispanic citizens. Before taking a look at the most prevalent theories on CS, I have to point out that we should always keep in mind that CS “belongs to spontaneous, colloquial speech, and it is often unconscious when occurring in the middle of a sentence” (Lipski 2008:233). It is obvious that in case of the occurrence of any hesitations, interruptions or course changes, potential examples are not significant for further study anymore due to lost of authenticity. Firstly, I will introduce three forms of bilingual behavior under the cover term CS. The following examples vary concerning the embedded language (Spanish/ in italics) in relation to the main language (English).
