Shell is considered as a group of energy and petrochemical companies which operates in more than 145 countries. The company employs almost 120,000 people worldwide. Moreover it provides about three percent of the global oil and about 3.5 percent of the global gas. Shell company also includes other activities as for example: Marketing, transport, and retail of oil and gas. Shell wants to keep minimizing the worlds impact on the environment while including more unconventional fuels in order to encounter the worlds increasing demand for energy. That is why they consider it as a business preference to convert their business portfolio. One of the main challenges Shell has to accomplish is how to use their profits and their accumulated reserves in order to promote a sustainable business growth. Shell has an operating profit which is partially divided in the following things: One part of their operating profit goes to the government in form of taxes, another goes to shareholders in form of dividends and the last one is invested in the business exploration, operational improvement, research and development. Shells strictly commercial research and development program focuses mainly on sustainable usage of the resources and taking care of the environment. The sustainable development of the company is sectioned in three closely interconnected ways. The first one is meeting the global energy challenge by helping the two billion people who currently live without modern energy getting access to it, offering cleaner products like low-sulphur petrol, diesel and hydrogen for new fuel cell vehicles and by generally shifting the world economy to cheaper renewable energy. The second one is using less energy, water and other resources for a lower impact on biodiversity and lover emissions. The last one focuses on improving social performances by better safety standards for employees, building closer relationships to customers, reducing disruptions in communities, employing local people and using local suppliers for better economic benefits.
Liquid fuels used to be highly efficient for motor transport because it provides a lot of energy relating to its small volume, has an easy storage and with a single thankful it carries cars for a long distance. But nowadays there is only a limited supply and with the danger of global warming fuel has to be efficient and the creation of greenhouse gases. Petrol and Diesel are going to be the major road transportation fuel until at least 2030 but Shell tries to make these fuels the most efficient. Shell has already developed efficient Diesel engine technology running with less nitrogen oxide and sulphur. More than one billion US Dollars have already been invested in researching and developing several new fuels with water and renewable sources to provide hydrogen to power cars carbon free. Fuel cell engines running on hydrogen makes vehicle transportation almost sustainable. Hydrogen is produced locally and by using renewable sources the only emission is water. Fuels from natural gas have also been created, converting natural gas into zerosulphur fuel. Shell is still working on producing fuel out of waste wood and straw with lower emissions than 90% but it is currently too expensive to produce.
Summed up, internal combustion engine and hydrocarbons promoted the economic growth over the last century but nowadays we have to think about our environment and global warming and switching to sustainable transportation is a big step for a better future.
Dear Sir or Madam,
First of all, if I had to describe myself I would say that I am curious, spontaneous and confirmed. I got my vocational diploma in 2007 and ever since I knew what I want to do and have been working on achieving my dreams. My name is Lisa Höltich, I was born on December 26th in 1987 and I would call myself a real 'Hamburger Deern'. I am really active, close to the harbor and open-minded. After finishing my apprenticeship as a forwarding merchant I noticed that I want to do more, and started studying logistics and retail at the Fresenius university. But I still feel like I am supposed to do more and therefore I am singing up for a semester abroad, in a city that seems perfect for me and my needs...
The city of unlimited possibilities, where dreams come true has been fascinating me since childhood. New York means freedom, variety and an unforgettable adventure. It is one of my biggest dreams to live there because it is the city that connects and coordinates the world’s most important harbors. During my apprenticeship as forwarding merchant I had the chance to coordinate some of the shipments to New York. Since the first shipment I coordinated it has been my dream to travel to New York and see the harbor with my own eyes. My studies, with focus on logistics and retail, showed me how important it is to be able to speak English. It is not only the unforgettable adventure that makes me want to travel to New York, it is the opportunity to learn the language. Why New York? Obviously, it is the only city where I get to meet so many people with different nationalities, traditions and ways of living. Combining this with a language study travel would make one of my biggest wishes come true.
This journey gives me the chance to get to know me better, and find out what kind of weaknesses I have. How am I going to develop? Can I integrate myself? I am willing to engage myself with these experiences because I know that only New York can connect my curiosity, my interests, my future job and my thirst for knowledge. Situations that you have experienced coin your character, can form attitudes and opinions and can make you see something in a different light. This is a unique chance for me to experience an unforgettable adventure, and make myself a person I maybe never thought I could be because that is the meaning of such travels. I think that there is no other City than New York that embosses my character and gives me so many options for my future. They do not call New York 'the city of infinite possibilities’ for nothing.
The term of sustainability in this day and age has a paramount importance for the whole world system. The primary aim of a traditional company management is to increase profits and to reduce redundant costs. However there is the necessity to rethink of new standards due to the changes given in the global society and environment. The society’s new thinking and sustainable attitude lead to the results that companies have to adapt to these changes even to archive a long-term position in the economy. At this point sustainable transport means for example an efficient utilization of transport capacity or an optimal transport routing.
The concept of sustainability is based on forward-looking thinking and acting. At this point the companies are focused on optimal use of the limited resources without enhancing the negative impact on the environment. The scope of the sustainability is to create a longtermed and sustainable environment.
Sustainability consists of three dimensions; economical, ecological and social, which are related to each other.
The economical dimension refers to the finance of a company and this means the boosting -f profits and the minimization of costs at the same time. In general this dimension is the most important for the companies.( Ehnert; Harry; Zink 2014, p. 14 et. seq )
Furthermore the ecological dimension implies the wisely usage of natural resources depending on the consideration of the retention of a sustainable environment (Dilard; Dujon; King 2009, p. 10).
The social dimension includes the aspect of the society. The society has a meaningful effect on the other two dimensions and is basically focused on the creation of fundamental values. .( Ehnert; Harry; Zink 2014, p. 14 et. seq )
There are several reasons for sustainability. One of the reason is the reduction of the given petroleum reserves. The substance petroleum is a limited and costly resource and consequently it is necessary to find alternatives. Due to the limitation of this precious resource the assumption is that demand of petroleum will be fall significantly and in a few years the whole world will use gasoline for the motor vehicles as another option. (Black 2010 p. 5 et. seq )
A further reason refers to the global atmospheric impacts and a lot of people think that the negative impacts on the global atmosphere has already started. A contribution to the negative impacts are the emissions, which are contributing to the changes of the climates and to the discussion of global warming. Especially the transport sector has a paramount responsibility for the emissions changes. The main reasons for the emission changes are due to the several modes of transportations, which produce heats and emission. This leads to negative impacts on the environment. (Black 2010 p. 5 et. seq )
Not only the transport companies are responsible for the changes of emission, but also the private use of motor vehicles. The private usage of motor vehicle contributes a lot to the emissions. This has another significant impact on the health of the society. The aim is the reduction of the emission to be able to create a sustainable future.
Beyond that the safety precaution will be tightened due to the increasing number of crash fatalities and injuries. (Black 2010 p. 7 et. seq )
The consideration of congestion as a reason for sustainability is controversial. Congestion is a main factor for sustainable transport, because it contributes to reduction of speed and therefore to the reduction of fuel use. (Black 2010 p. 8 et. seq )
The issue of noise is another motive for sustainability. Noise has a negative influence on human health for instance heart disease and human psychology for example nervousness or behavioural disorders. It is necessary to minimize the noise and at this point the transport system has the possibility to enable changes. (Black 2010 p. 8 et. seq )
There are several complications in the field of transport sustainability. The current issue of transport mobility is complicated and controversial. In this day and age the use of road transport is firmly established in the logistic sector. The European Union was not able to convince the companies to change from road transport into another mode of transport and to plan logistical processes and organisational structures with the involvement of the environment and society. The reason for the failure is that the financial results of the accustomed transport mode did not indicate to the companies the necessity to cast about alternatives. In general the way that the companies choose the mode of transport is based on the following three factors. The companies take into account the price, transport susceptibility and the characteristics of the transport mode to find the accurate way of transportation.
In addition it is a fact that the use of the network capacity and the benefits of each mode of transport enable a reduction of congestion, emission, accidents and pollution. At this point the European Union reconsidered the policy and law that the realisation of logistical processes have to include concepts of sustainability regulates it. However it is still a complication for companies to create an overall concept implying different modes of transport.
Furthermore the prices and taxes with regard to the mode of transport and fuel is another controversial issue. The idea is to create a tax system, which influences unsustainable decisions in order to protect the environmental atmosphere.
Another goal of sustainability is the consideration of the confrontation between external effects and logistical costs. However the political supports in form of incentives are limited. The incentives would provide benefits for silent vehicles, safety and sustainable modes of transport. (Golinska, Hajdul 2012 p 5 et seq)
There are a paramount of possibility to promote a sustainable transport. However it is important that both the companies and the society act in concert to realize the possible opportunities. In addition it is important that the modes of transport and the attitude are continually improving.
A simple solution to create a sustainable transport is the invitation of the society to walk or cycle more. This contributes to the reduction of the use of motorised transport modes and therefore less use of energy consumption. However this solution is not suitable for all circumstances, which are dependent on various factors such as distance, climate or limited time.
A further solution is the promotion of public transport. The huge number of offers of public transport for instance busses. One of the advantages of the bus is less use of energy due to the fact that more people can be transported. The result is an overall reduction of vehicles. Nevertheless this solution is not an individual transport but people have to be oriented towards the public transport.
Another solution is based on parking charges and the reduction of parking possibility, which lead to the reduced usage of motor vehicles. Moreover road pricing would reduce the usage of motor vehicles and the demand of traveling.
An important solution is focused on the fuel taxes. The increase of fuel taxes reduces the usage of car vehicles and additionally it helps to contribute to an environmental performance. However this solution is a complex issue and causes political and economical conflicts.
A further solution refers to the innovative technology of vehicles, which produce less emissions and less energy consumption.( Layard; Davoudi; Batt 2001 p140 et seq)
How would you change the world if you could? The sustainability is based on three dimensions; economical, ecological and social. In order to withstand competition the companies have to think and act on a sustainable way. In general the companies are interested in boosting their profits, but the issue of sustainability is getting more and more important for the whole world system. At this point the companies are forced to adapt to the new circumstances otherwise it is difficult to stand the position in the economy. An unsustainable attitude has negative consequences for the business such as damage to the image of the company, loss of customers and therefore a deterioration of profits.
The sustainability is important for the economy to obtain the environment. However to obtain the environment it is as well important that the society is integrated in sustainable development. This means that each private person has to think and act sustainable in order to give a guarantee to the next generation a sustainable atmosphere and in addition to continue to offer resources.
A private person should start with small actions for instance to separate the waste, to turn off the light and heater, when leaving the room and use public transport. In addition it is sustainable, when a private person use a bicycle and not a car to cover a small distance.
