The success of a company depends largely on the success of its employees. Intense competition exists today to obtain the best personnel on the market. On the one hand, it is important for a company to promote itself and attract the best people. At the same time however the company needs to keep the employees it has and develop their potential for future challenges. In order to maintain and promote the performance, flexibility and productivity of the employees, it is important for management to understand the underlying motivation of the employees and where necessary counteract negative tendencies. As explained above, Maslow’s theory is one of the evident concepts to apply for obtaining employee motivation, namely through its logic and simplicity. The idea is to provide an environment free of obstacles, in which the desire for self-realization and fulfillment is not hindered (see Robbins, 2008, p. 681).
Management needs to understand that a basic requirement for satisfying employee needs includes conditions such as freedom to express oneself, fairness, honesty and correctness within the group. A limitation of these freedoms would result in immediate negative reaction (see Maslow, 1954, p. 74).
