Over the past decade, TV series have aroused a growing popular interest, which makes them a subject worth studying. In my project I am willing to consider the music soundtracks attached to TV series focusing on the title sequence and trying to answer questions like: Which is the relationship between title sequence music and TV series genre? When compared to full length movies, which are the specific functions of the title sequence music in TV series?
To develop this subject I will firstly comment on some general issues regarding TV series influence on popular culture and on the reception of popular music. Secondly, I will consider the characteristics and functions of the title sequence music, in a general way and by analyzing the differences between two paradigmatic cases: CSI and True Blood. Finally I will briefly consider the differences and similarities between the cases considered and draw some conclusions.

CSI: Crime Scene Investigation
The plot is about a forensics team of Las Vegas Police Department whose goal is to solve criminal cases by reconstructing facts and by analyzing each and every evidence in the crime scene with the most advanced scientific methods. As scientists, they don't rely on witnesses’ statements, taking into account only evidence-based facts. This precise aspect gave the series a more innovative look compared to classic police productions.
The same structure is repeated in each chapter: two different cases are analyzed in each chapter and only very few personal information about the characters is given. The innovation of the series consists in showing highly sophisticated forensic lab techniques through animation and short reconstructions of the key facts of the crimes under investigation.
The title sequence is 30 seconds long and comes after a short pre-credit sequence, in which a corpse is discovered, usually by some passerby, seconds before the police shows up. The images in the credits combine short sequences of the series to show the cast members while they are working. Other images are animations of microscope images. The title credits are subject to small changes because the characters look has to be updated along the subsequent seasons.
