Summary Details

This study applies the existing Dynamic Prescriptive Islamic Moral Economy (DPiME) framework to a longitudinal documentary assessment of Islamic banking in Kenya. DPiME distinguishes Islamic Moral Economy (X) from Islamic Institutional Capacity (Y), treats the Halal Floor as an admissibility constraint, and diagnoses performance through the binding coordinate, proximity to an ideal state, dimensional imbalance and transition quality. The study uses institutional documents rather than questionnaires or interviews. The observation window is 2020–2025 for Gulf African Bank (GAB) and Dubai Islamic Bank Kenya (DIB), and 2023–2025 for Premier Bank Kenya, reflecting the available reporting history. Recorded results show X scores of 0.275–0.308 and Y scores of 0.409–0.438 for GAB; X of 0.250 and Y of 0.333–0.404 for Premier; and a partial Y score of 0.344 for DIB, for which X could not be calculated from the evidence currently coded. X is the binding dimension for GAB and Premier. All bank-year Halal Floor classifications are Conditional under the study’s operational rules; this is not a finding of Shariah non-compliance. The central observation is that institutional and governance disclosures are more observable than realised moral-economic outcomes. The study contributes by operationalising and empirically applying an existing framework to Kenyan Islamic banking. Since the indicator-level evidence audit is not complete for every bank-year, numerical findings are provisional, not definitive bank ratings.
