Physical education (PE) is a significant component of children's balanced development because it connects physical activity with physical literacy, health, social interaction, confidence, and lifelong participation in active lifestyles. It should not be understood simply as a period for playing games or releasing energy. Quality physical education provides structured opportunities through which children learn movement skills, develop physical competence, understand health, cooperate with others, and develop positive attitudes towards physical activity.
The importance of physical activity during childhood is well established. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends that children and adolescents aged 5–17 years undertake an average of at least 60 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity each day, including activities that strengthen muscles and bones at least three days a week. Physical education at school is one of the institutional settings through which children can acquire the knowledge, skills and confidence necessary to become physically active.
