This literary studies paper analyzes Tobias Wolff’s short story Smokers using Pierre Bourdieu’s concept of social capital. It focuses on the question of how social networks and class affiliation shape the protagonist’s opportunities for upward mobility and challenge the meritocratic promise of social advancement. By examining the protagonist’s relationships with Eugene and Talbot, the paper demonstrates how the narrator deliberately builds social capital while sacrificing solidarity in favor of personal gain.
Diese literaturwissenschaftliche Arbeit analysiert Tobias Wolffs Kurzgeschichte Smokers unter Rückgriff auf Pierre Bourdieus Konzept des sozialen Kapitals. Im Mittelpunkt steht die Frage, wie soziale Netzwerke und Klassenzugehörigkeit die Aufstiegschancen des Protagonisten prägen und das meritokratische Versprechen sozialer Mobilität infrage stellen. Anhand der Beziehungen zu Eugene und Talbot wird gezeigt, wie der Erzähler gezielt soziales Kapital aufbaut und dabei Solidarität zugunsten persönlicher Vorteile aufgibt.
