Jahrhunderts in China.

Excerpt from the Book

The Big Sword Society

Initially, the Big Sword Society filled a power vacuum, because the Qing Officals could not afford stability while they were fighting the Sino-Japanese war (Esherick 1987: p. 112-113; Perry 1984: p. 436). Therefore, the growing christian presence in this area in the 1890s became a threatening factor to the traditional power structures. Churches provided bandits protection and guaranteed advantages in lawsuits. The traditional community life were additionally disrupted, when Chinese converts refused to join the village communities (Jellicoe 1993: p. 10-11; Esherick 1997: p. 89-90). The local population and gentry were traditionally suspicious of exclusivist religions. Christianity projected the fear of the erosion of Chinese social culture. Chinese values were fundamentally contested (Scalapino 1985: p. 66.67). Christians ridiculed the credibility of invulnerability, caused by their intolerance of heathen values (Esherick 1987: p. 113-114, 141-142). While the power of the Qing decreased, christian influence and the power of autonomous societies increased. This process were simultaneously accompanied by economic imperialism (Esherick 1987: p.112-113).
