Summary Details

This study offers a neo-Marxist reading of Irvin Morris's "From the Glittering World: A Navajo Story" (1997) that moves beyond celebratory multicultural readings of Indigenous resilience. Drawing on the ideas of Louis Althusser, Antonio Gramsci, and Fredric Jameson, I argue that Morris's work dramatizes how colonial capitalism operates through the extraction of both land and labor, how Indigenous resistance is constrained by the hegemonic forces of modernity, and how the "Glittering World" of consumer capitalism produces a structural rupture that separates surface appearance from substantive reality. The glittering surfaces of technology, consumer goods, and wage labor mask the ongoing exploitation of Navajo lands and peoples. Morris's blend of creation myth, memoir, history, and fiction exposes the ideological operations that make colonial extraction appear as progress and Indigenous poverty appear as individual failure. The book's ultimate significance lies in its staging of a world where traditional sources of meaning and community have been systematically undermined, yet nothing has emerged to replace them except the hollow glitter of capitalist modernity.
