The importance of the border between Spain and Morocco

The border between Spain and Morocco has received a lot of attention in the last couple of years. This can be explained by the meaning this border has gained on a global reach. It is not purely a border between two countries; no, it is more. It stands for the division between two continents, namely Europe and Africa. These two continents also symbolise more, since Europe is one of the richest continents on Earth, while Africa is the complete contrast and is famous for its poverty. Thus, this border symbolises the North - South division of the globe and also divides the developing world from the developed world. Of course, this is not to say that all of Africa has not developed yet or that all of Europe is equally rich and developed. It is only meant to draw a general picture in order to show the different cleavages which this frontier separates. This border is although a border of the European Union and therefore strongly protected. This is necessary on the one hand, since the Schengen Agreement allows free movement inside the European Union (EU). This economic and cultural space is fiercely guarded by the members of the European Union. Countries whose national borders are at the same time EU borders experience a lot of pressure from the other members to safeguard these borders strongly, because it becomes more difficult to find any unwanted immigrants, once they entered the Schengen area (Piper, G.,2005).

Globalization and Global Migration: This section discusses the various facets of globalization, utilizing theories from Ritzer and Giddens to explain why global interconnectedness leads to increased migratory movements.

Field Study: The border between Spain and Morocco: This section serves as the main empirical analysis, covering the geopolitical significance of the frontier and the specific challenges of border security.

The importance of the border between Spain and Morocco: This chapter contextualizes the border as a symbolic division between the wealthy North and the impoverished South, and its role as a external frontier for the European Union.

What kind of migration takes place and what are the reasons behind it?: This chapter analyzes the shift from voluntary to irregular migration and the complex push-pull factors, including economic development and the search for better life opportunities.

Spain, Emigration and Immigration: This section traces the historical shift of Spain from a country of emigration to a transit and finally a primary receiving country for labor.

Immigration politics of Spain: This chapter reviews the legislative history of Spanish immigration, from the liberal approaches of the early 1980s to the restrictive, security-focused measures implemented in the late 1990s and 2000s.

Morocco and Mediterranean Migration: This chapter examines the transformation of Morocco into a transit and receiving country, as well as its cooperation with the EU through initiatives like the Barcelona Process.

Conclusion: The final chapter synthesizes the findings, arguing that border militarization addresses symptoms rather than causes and calling for deeper international cooperation to tackle the roots of global migration.
