Summary Details

Der vorliegende Text befasst sich mit William Shakespeares Tod, Testament und Totenkult und versucht die vorhandenen Indizien abzuwägen, um der historischen Wahrheit ein Stück näher zu kommen. "Death, a necessary end,/ Will come when it will come" heißt es in Julius Caesar, doch ist Shakespeares Tod kein Ende, sondern vielmehr ein neuer Startpunkt für die Auseinandersetzung mit der historischen Persönlichkeit.

"I've seen many suicide notes written by persons who ended their lives by taking poison. Their notes follow the exact pattern of the first page of Shakespeare's will. The writer starts out clearly and coherently, and gradually his handwriting becomes more and more disjointed and blotted and his memory begins to erode. Eventually, if he is unable to finish the suicide note, he stops abruptly, probably in the middle of a sentence. This suggests to me that Shakespeare may have been poisoned."

So äußert sich Dr. Michael Baden, seines Zeichens ehemaliger oberster Gerichtsmediziner von New York City, in Charles Hamiltons Buch "In search of Shakespeare". Doch er fügt hinzu: "But this isn't a very tenable theory […] because there wasn't anyone who wanted to knock off Shakespeare […]. Or was there?".
Und Hamilton antwortet: "Yes, there was"…
