Excerpt from the Book

1 Quality of Life

"Often, the ability to attract and retain a qualified workforce is an important factor, while for many employees 'quality of life' issues ... determine their choice of place to life."

Heidelberg (140,000 inhabitants) with its river close to the mountains is beautiful and is, with an 800 year history, on UNESCO's preliminary list of world cultural heritages. A lot of attractions bring 800,000 tourists a year.

Partnerships to cities around the world, e.g. Cambridge.

Difficult to find an apartment; 68.800 flats are high in demand. Population is forced to move to the suburbs. The City Council hat to do research in July 2002 in order to adjust the council’s policy of flat building funds. High purchase prices and rents for private space in the city (6.4 to 9.0 € per m² and month in 2001, German average 5.14 Euro).

Excellent medical services. Highest ratio of doctors to inhabitants in Germany (384 doctors/1,000 inhabitants, German average: 154). Plenty of space in hospitals.

"School city" Heidelberg; 34 public and 11 private schools.

The crime rate is average.

Bad supply of places in kindergartens.

Good services for old people.
